What sets the price

What Affects Your Rate

Nobody can give you a real number without asking a few questions first. Here is what actually moves the price.

01

Age

The biggest factor by far. Policies are priced on your age when the policy is issued, and every birthday costs more. Waiting a year is the most expensive thing most people do.

02

Tobacco

Cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco put you in a different rate class, and many carriers ask about vaping too. Most ask about the last twelve months.

03

Health history

Recent hospital stays, heart or lung conditions, diabetes with complications and certain medications can move you from simplified issue to guaranteed issue, which costs more and adds a waiting period.

04

How much coverage you want

More coverage costs more, but the price does not climb in a straight line. Sometimes a slightly smaller policy is a lot cheaper per dollar of coverage.

05

Gender

Women generally pay less than men at the same age for the same coverage.

06

Your state

Rates and the products available to you vary by state.

An honest note about online prices

Any price you see online before you answer health questions is an estimate, not an offer. The number that matters is the one you get after the questions.
